Big Brown made it look easy last Saturday, winning the Preakness Stakes by 5 1/4 lengths. Big Brown was in good position early on, stalking the leaders through the backstretch. He then made his move approaching the final turn where jockey Kent Desormeaux positioned his horse 3-wide for clear racing room. Desormeaux then asked his horse at the top of the stretch and Big Brown responded with an explosive run to distance the field. And then it was just a nice armchair ride to the finish for the Preakness winner. Big Brown is now just a Belmont Stakes victory away on June 7th from being the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years.
Trainer Richard Dutrow was asked after the race about Big Brown’s training regimen leading up to the Belmont. Once again he will train his champion colt lightly in preparation for the 1-˝ mile New York journey in three weeks. Big Brown’s connections reported their prized colt to be in good condition after the Preakness, looking alert and fit in his stall the morning after the race. Fortunately, all the runners from this Preakness came out of the race in good condition.
Big Brown will face tougher competition in the Belmont.
