Description

Hey everyone this is Dana Ward with the Preakness Stakes Report on GamblersTelevision.com.

Even as the post time 2 to 1 favorite, Big Brown overcame the odds to win the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby. Heading into Saturday’s race only 3 favorites have won in the last 21 races and only 1 horse has ever won breaking from postposition #20. And probably the biggest obstacle was the fact that Big Brown was the first horse since 1915 to win the Kentucky Derby with just 3-life time starts heading into the race.

Big Brown will enter the Preakness once again as the favorite and favorites have done well in the second leg of the Triple Crown. Favorites have won the Preakness Stakes 9 of the last 21 races. The race favors front-runners and is a perfect fit for the style of Big Brown who likes to run at or near the lead. The talk heading into the Preakness is the lack of Kentucky Derby runners who will face Big Brown on May 17th. Big Brown impressed his rivals by beating the Colts entered in the Kentucky Derby by 8 lengths or better. That has left many of the connections from the Kentucky Derby Field talking layoff for their horses.

The unfortunate event at the end of the Kentucky Derby saw the passing of the filly Eight Belles. Eight Belles broke both of her ankles shortly after the race and was immediately euthanized. Horse racing has taken steps to insure the safety of the horses in recent years by installing synthetic race surfaces on some of the major tracks across the country. Synthetic tracks are safer for horses as they provide less wear and tear to horses legs resulting in lesser injuries and deaths on the track. The Triple Crown races are still run on dirt surfaces. After the unfortunate incidents to Eight Belles and Barbaro we may see a push for synthetic surfaces at the Triple Crown racetracks.
